Compensation-Location Factor

Marc Torrey, SelectLeaders Global Sales Director, and CEL Associates, Christopher Lee, creator of the first National Real Estate Compensation Survey and database teamed up for The NAIOP May 2019 Webinar to discuss “Hiring and Retaining Top CRE Talent”. Marc’s data includes the just released Q1 2019 SelectLeaders Job Barometer. One of the factors in the 25% increase in Q1 2019 hiring and more aggressive applications per job views is the movement to new High Growth cities with lower housing costs which underscores how compensation now includes affordable lifestyle considerations. Property Management in particular has been tracked for over a decade as one of the fastest pipelines into a career in real estate with much higher odds of being hired than in other CRE job fields, especially compared to more popular jobs such as acquisitions and development. Over the years, Property Management’s role and job functions have incorporated many former exclusively Asset Management responsibilities. However the cost of living and commuting in areas such as San Francisco can make Property Management one of the most difficult hiring challenges in these locations.
